What Is a Viton FKM O-Ring?

Viton® O-rings are made from FKM, short for fluoroelastomer. Viton and FKM refer to the same material family; Viton® is simply Chemours’ registered trade name for it.

FKM is a versatile sealing material for fuel, oil, heat and a wide range of chemicals, but not every grade performs the same way. General-purpose options like Viton A suit many everyday industrial uses, while higher-fluorine grades are better suited to tougher chemical environments.

That’s why choosing the right Viton grade depends on what the seal will be exposed to.

Industrial Experts can help match the material to your application so you’re not paying for more performance than you need.

Viton FKM O-Ring Properties and Performance

Here’s how standard Viton FKM performs in most sealing jobs.

  • Temperature: Continuous to +200°C (392°F), with short spikes to +250°C (482°F)
  • Low temperature: Special grades can reach −40°C (−40°F)
  • Resists: Mineral oils, hydraulic fluids, fuels, aromatics, and many organic solvents
  • Gas permeability: Low, comparable to butyl rubber
  • Weaknesses: Steam, hot water, and ketones
  • Standard compound: 70 Shore A

If you’re unsure which FKM grade suits your application, Industrial Experts can help match the material to your operating conditions before you order.

Comparing Viton vs Nitrile vs FFKM O-Rings

The main difference between nitrile, Viton and FFKM is how far each material can be pushed before you need to step up to the next option.

As a rule of thumb, it’s worth upgrading from Nitrile (NBR) to Viton once temperatures exceed +120°C or you’re dealing with harsher fuels or solvents. FFKM sits above both, built for extreme chemicals and high temperatures, but it costs considerably more.

All three materials can handle petroleum-based media, but temperature capability and costs increase as you move from NBR to FKM to FFKM.

Material Max Temperature (°C / °F) Resists Relative Cost Choose When
Nitrile (NBR) +120°C (+248°F) Oils, fuels, hydraulic fluid Low Standard oil and fuel jobs
Viton (FKM) +200°C (+392°F), +250°C peak Fuels, oils, many chemicals Mid Heat and harsh chemicals
FFKM +327°C (+621°F) Near-universal Highest Extreme chemicals, critical service

If your job needs something else, we also stock Silicone O-Rings for food-grade and wide-temperature work, EPDM Sponge Cord for water and weather sealing, and FEPM (Aflas) O-Rings for oilfield and high-pH media that push past what Viton can handle.

Find the Right Viton FKM Grade

Not all FKM performs the same way. Different grades are designed for different operating conditions, so the best option depends on what it will actually be exposed to. At a glance:

  • Viton A: General-purpose choice for oils, fuels and heat
  • Viton B: Stronger chemical resistance for tougher applications
  • Viton F and GF: Better suited to methanol and more aggressive fuel blends
  • Viton GLT and GFLT: Designed to stay flexible in colder conditions
  • 70 Shore A: Standard hardness for most sealing applications
  • 90 Shore A: Available where higher pressure or greater hardness is needed

Higher-performance grades can cost more, so there’s no benefit in automatically choosing the most advanced compound. Industrial Experts can help match the Viton FKM grade to your media, temperature range and application so you get the performance you need without overspecifying the seal.

Need a Standard or Custom Viton O-Ring?

Industrial Experts supply Viton O-rings in standard AS568 imperial and ISO 3601 metric sizes, with custom options available when standard dimensions won’t suit the job.

Our sizing mainly comes down to:

  • Inside diameter (ID)
  • Outside diameter (OD)
  • Cross-section (CS)

Common cross-sections include 1.78 mm, 2.62 mm and 3.53 mm, covering many standard grooves and applications. For larger diameters or non-standard grooves, we can also produce custom Viton O-rings. Depending on the job, these can be:

  • Moulded to specification for repeat production
  • Vulcanised from cord for larger diameters, where moulding is less practical

Viton FKM O-Ring Applications

Viton O-rings in Australia turn up across a wide range of industries wherever standard rubber seals simply don’t hold up. We see it used most in:

  • Automotive and fuel systems: For fuel lines and pumps against petrol, diesel, and biofuel.
  • Chemical processing: For pumps and valves carrying acids, solvents, and aromatics.
  • Oil and gas: For sealing downhole and surface equipment against hot hydrocarbons.
  • Aerospace fuel and hydraulics: Holding a seal across wide temperature swings.
  • Engines and high-temperature seals: For shafts and covers near hot running gear.

Refer to our O-Rings application guide for more details on matching material to the operating conditions.

Viton FKM O-Rings in Australia FAQs

Are Viton and FKM O-Rings the same?

Yes. FKM is the technical name for the material, a fluoroelastomer, and Viton® is Chemours’ registered brand name for it. Other manufacturers sell their own FKM compounds under different names, but they all fall under the same FKM family, with performance varying by grade rather than by brand.

What is the temperature range of Viton O-Rings?

Standard Viton FKM runs continuously to around +200°C (392°F), with short spikes tolerated up to +250°C (482°F). On the low end, standard grades hold to about −30°C (−22°F), while special low-temperature grades like GLT and GFLT stay flexible down to −40°C (−40°F). The exact range depends on the specific grade, so it’s worth checking against your actual operating conditions before ordering.

Can Viton O-Rings handle fuel and oil?

Yes, this is one of Viton’s core strengths. It resists mineral oils, hydraulic fluids, fuels, and aromatics, as well as ozone and many organic solvents. Where it runs into trouble is steam, hot water, and ketones, so if your application involves those, it’s worth talking to our team about whether a different grade or material is a better fit.
